Abstract

Background: Humerus fractures can be proximal, diaphyseal, or distal, varying according to the mechanism of trauma and age group. They are common in the elderly and can cause pain, functional limitation, and complications. Treatment can be conservative or surgical, depending on the severity and condition of the patient. Aim: Through a literature review, compare the results of conservative and surgical management of humerus fractures.

Method: The search for studies was performed in the PubMed database and included articles published in the last five years, based on the following search strategy: humer[Title] AND (conservative[Title] AND surg*[Title]).

Results: Initially, 13 studies were identified. After screening titles and abstracts, six were excluded because they did not directly address the management of humerus fractures or because they were letters to the editor, leaving seven articles that constituted the sample for this review.

Conclusion: The treatment of humeral fractures should be individualized, considering the type of fracture, age, and functional profile of the patient. Although conservative treatment has good results in most cases, surgery may be indicated in specific situations, but it involves a higher risk of complications. Finally, more robust studies are still needed to define the best approach in each context.
